NutriBioMe – Linking Gut Microbiome and Dietary Habits for Personalized Nutrition in Montenegro

The Centre of Excellence (FoodHub) at the University of Donja Gorica is the coordinator of the new project titled “NutriBioMe – Linking Gut Microbiome and Dietary Habits for Personalised Nutrition in Montenegro.” Project partners include the Medical University of Innsbruck and the Institute of Public Health of Montenegro.
The project is co-funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation of Montenegro through the National Grant Scheme for Excellence.
The main goal of NutriBioMe is to explore the connection between the gut microbiome and dietary patterns among the Montenegrin population, aiming to establish the foundations for evidence-based personalised nutrition strategies and public health recommendations.
Spanning 48 months, the project is a pioneering initiative in the region that combines microbiome science, dietary data, and modern machine learning approaches. By analysing stool samples and dietary habits from participants across Montenegro, NutriBioMe aims to develop algorithms for generating personalised nutrition recommendations tailored to local dietary culture.
Through close collaboration with national and international partners, the project seeks to promote public health, sustainable diets, and greater awareness of the importance of gut microbiota. Moreover, it will contribute to the creation of a comprehensive scientific database that can support future national strategies on nutrition and preventive healthcare.
